Beginning Acrylic Painting Student Third Artwork after Three Lessons

In the beginning Acrylic painting class this is an example of a landscape painting completed by a student, Diane Miller,  in their third complete 2 hour lesson.
If you drop in at the Raven Art School Studio you will see the process for making the painting,

  • beginning with the watercolor like use of acrylics in the sky background,
  • doing an under painting of the lighthouse
  • followed by a glazes of color on the lighthouse
  • concluding with creation of the foreground of grasses.
Of course there is instruction on how to mix the colors, applying glazes and various brush techniques in creating the grassy foreground during live lesson.

Why don't you join us  on Thursday Mornings  from 10 to noon and grow as a painter!  Class instruction is reasonable.

An Evening with Lorin Willey Thinking out about Temperature.... and Color

    Students Watching Lorin....
Lorin Willey, Raven Art School's Intermediate and Advanced Instructor, spends the better part of Thursday evening sharing insights about painting. but sometimes  at the end of the evening he just sits and thinks. Here  we have some thoughts   Lorin would like to share on color....

    Temperature and Color

My students often get confused about temperature and what it means in painting. It’s best to keep this simple to begin with. Warm is yellow, and cool is blue. Whenever a color leans towards yellow it begins to get warmer. Whenever a color leans towards blue it begins to get cooler.

Let’s take red. If you add yellow to red it appears warmer. If you add blue to red it appears to get cooler. This will happen with all of your colors.  Yellow is warmer than red. Let me give you an example of this.  Why does ultramarine blue appear cooler than cerulean blue? When one paints a summer sky as we look upwards the blue gets cooler.  And when we paint this color we often will use ultramarine blue.  Ultramarine appears cooler than cerulean blue because it tends towards reddish, or violet. Cerulean blue tends towards greenish which is warmer because of the addition of green which is made with yellow added to blue.  We often use cerulean blue as the summer sky dips towards the horizon.  The yellow sunlight begins to reflect off the earth’s atmosphere which is made of vapor and dust particulates. This tends to shift the blue sky towards a warmer tone.

Also keep in mind that if you add white, or black to your colors that this will also cool them. This is because white and black tend towards blue in that they will cool down your mixtures. I will often tell my students to simply think of white and black as blue. By warming your whites and blacks with yellows, oranges and reds before adding them to mixtures you can counter this affect. Often when painters want a warm shadow they will use an earth like tone made of other colors in their palette. For example if you used a mixture of ultramarine blue and burnt umber to make  your dark tone in the shadows, you could easily warm this shadow by adding more burnt umber to this mixture, and likewise if you wanted to cool this same mixture you would simply add more ultramarine.
    .

Here is Lorin Doing Demo on Color......
Ah! That is what the students were watching!
If you wanted to warm this same mixture even further you could add red or yellow to it. Keep in mind that red, violet and green are warmer than blue, and that red, orange and green are cooler than yellow

Just remember that yellow is the warmest color on your palette, and blue is your coolest. An addition of either version of these two hues will shift your mixture in that colors particular direction and temperature.

    Yours in paint,

    Lorin Willey

A Beginner Oil Painting is Progressing

A few post ago you saw this image of painting at the beginning stages.

As you can see the form of the pot and fruit and plate are more developed.  The important issue is reading values.  We use the common tool of squinting  plus a little known technical tool that simplifies colors and values and makes them more easy to read.

After the work in this traditional classical grisaille technique of a well developed value weighted monochromatic under-painting, we begin glazing the monochromatic under-painting with "veils" of color.

But there is another way we learn to paint....more loosely...ala prima.  If you check the next images you will see a set up of  a still life with grapes and pomegranates with an ala prima painting of the still life near the bottom of the image.

See the still life with the wine bottle and the painting made from it.

Learn the Fundamentals of Painting at Raven Art School

This student had never worked from life...yet is competently creating form using the grisaille method of underpainting for the first time. Once completed with the grisaille underpainting, she will begin glazing over the underpainting creating glowing color in her painting. Following this indirect method of painting, she will do an alla prima ( direct method) painting of the same or similar subject.  In this four week painting class the student will complete two paintings.

Through the process, the student learns how to use a grid in drawing, to judge values, color mixing and begins understanding composition.

Consider joining us on Thursday for this Beginning Oil Painting class in the mornings from 10 to noon.  Or if you prefer painting in acrylic, try our Beginning Acrylic Painting in the morning on Monday from 10 to noon.

We also have  Monday and Thursday  intermediate painting classes  accommodating the specific direction of the student artist.

Why not draw or Paint a character portrait tonight...dressed in white defused by candle light! - Life Drawing with Character Portrait At Raven Art School Monday Tonight

Why not draw or Paint a character portrait tonight... who is dressed in white with candle light!

Tonight at the Raven Gallery, you will have the opportunity to paint or draw a model posed in white  lite by candle light.  How often do you have the opportunity to create work with a model clothed in subtle whites infused with a dramatic candle light?  Tonight is your night.

One of the new things we are doing at the Raven is Character Portrait Poses this fall. Besides going to a WEEKLY schedule with a mix of nude and portrait models, we are adding a feature of themed character portrait poses. We would love to see you there...get your ideas for themes and portrait set ups that would interest you.

Will you EVER learn to Paint?

Have you ever wanted to REALLY learn to paint?  Or have you been painting but feel like your not making any real progress?  There is nothing like a refreshing "back to the Basics" painting class to put you back on track to success.

The Raven Art School is offering two Beginning Painting Classes, one in Acrylic and the other in Oil that will cover the essentials of painting in a clear and organized way.

I am your instructor, Judith Reidy.  Nothing gives me greater pleasure than guiding a student in developing as a painter.  I am interested in providing you with insight into how you could more systematically develop and attack a  painting idea.  I know  the feeling of what it is like to flounder as a student learning to paint..  I would like to make your growing pains as a painter less arduous....more anticipatory.  I would love to come along side you on your journey.

In addition to offering two Beginning Painting Classes one in Acrylic on Monday Mornings and the other in Oil on Thursday Mornings I will be offering an Intermediate level class Painting in All Media on Monday and Thursday  afternoon.    See details about classes here

If you would like to learn more about the classes please contact me here, mentioning your interest.
