He has judged numerous regional art competitions, including several Wisconsin Regional Arts Program Exhibits and Plein Air events, and has lectured at many of Wisconsin’s Art Institutions including Wisconsin Painters and Sculptures, Wisconsin Pastel Society, the Waukesha County Arts League, the West Allis Artists Alliance, and the Kettle Moraine Pastel Artists to name a few. Beginning Oil Painting in Four weeks

This is the typical example of the two types of paintings that will be made during this four week introductory oil painting class.

    Teapot and Pastry

    Raven Bottle

    Traditional Painting
    (Indirect Method)
    • Begin with Grisaille (monochromatic
      underpainting ) creating the form
    • Apply glazes of oil colors to create the color
This Indirect painting is a work in progress.......

    Alla Prima
    (Direct Method)
    • With a clear pattern of light & dark in mind
    • Begin with a simple draw in of the shapes,
       noting shadows and reflected lights
This alla prima or (direct method) painting is completed.

Watch for announcements  in Mid-October for  upcoming class offerings and time changes beginning soon.

A Beginner Oil Painting is Progressing

A few post ago you saw this image of painting at the beginning stages.

As you can see the form of the pot and fruit and plate are more developed.  The important issue is reading values.  We use the common tool of squinting  plus a little known technical tool that simplifies colors and values and makes them more easy to read.

After the work in this traditional classical grisaille technique of a well developed value weighted monochromatic under-painting, we begin glazing the monochromatic under-painting with "veils" of color.

But there is another way we learn to paint....more loosely...ala prima.  If you check the next images you will see a set up of  a still life with grapes and pomegranates with an ala prima painting of the still life near the bottom of the image.

See the still life with the wine bottle and the painting made from it.
